All Gateway enabled PAPA D-Star repeaters are on G2. You must register yourself to use the Gateway. The instructions are contained in the email that Cecil sent out on 4/14. Once you have submitted your registration request an administrator (Ed Kane) must validate it, so it might be a good idea to contact Ed after you complete the process.

At papasys.net/D-Star there is a link to an irc (on-line) chat room dedicated to D-Star but accessible to anyone anywhere in the world 24/7. An IRC channel is typically associated with a particular topic of interest where people can get together and discuss their interest. For example, there are channels for astronomy enthusiasts, Linux enthusiasts and people iterested in politics.

There are a number of IRC networks with a great variety of channels and there are some networks that are small and fairly narrowly focused on a small number of topics. The D-Star channel is on a small network that is very family oriented, irc.startlink-irc (not the larger network that also happens to be called Starlink). The link takes you to a page with a menu of web chat clients for this particular network. I suggest "CGI:IRC Chat Portal". This will take you to a login screen. A nickname is automatically supplied but you can type in any nickname you would like to use. The network is automatically supplied, but is irc.starlink-irc.org. The channel is #D-Star_radio.

The PAPA D-Star System

One of the greatest hurdles to implementation of D-Star (or other alternative digital systems) in crowded metropolitan areas like ours is the lack of pairs. Cecil Casillas worked tirelessly to obtain pairs for our use and without his efforts we would be stymied.

The performance of the new digital repeaters has been excellent, thanks to the hard work and cooperation of members and friends. The performance of D1, for example has been, to quote Cecil, “beyond my expectations.” It has been reported that D-4 is now one of the most active Gateways on the D-Star nationally.

Palomar is also operational and its performance is comparable to that of Oat. Mt. Woodson is getting a lot of traffic and provides excellent coverage in the San Diego area. We have a commitment for a pair on Crestline, which will provide tremendous coverage for the Inland Empire, and negotiations are continuing for a clean pair on Saddle.
